What is RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)?

A subjective scale (usually 1-10) used to measure the intensity of a set.

Pioneered in powerlifting by Mike Tuchscherer, the RPE scale measures how hard a set was. An RPE 10 means maximal effort (0 reps left). An RPE 9 means 1 rep left in the tank. It is a core component of modern auto-regulated strength training.
